So the idea of being wiped off the face of existence is scary. Now we all want to survive, right?
When you think of this, the thought of surviving such an event is just as scary. Lets say you do survive such an event by digging yourself into the earth. When eventually it would be safe for you to come out of hiding I believe the sight that will greet you will not be a pretty one!

As 2012 theory states, the earth will be hit by massive radiation, destroying every living thing it touches, including all vegetation and animals. Temperatures will be scorching because the earth's protection shield would have been destroyed. Nothing will be left. The only source of food I can think of is the ocean, but also with problems! The building blocks of life in the ocean is plankton, living on the surface of the ocean thus also being destroyed by the radiation. Plankton also being the main source of oxygen on earth and the trees also being destroyed our supply of oxygen would run short.

Now lets say you dig yourself into the earth the chances of you being either flooded in your own bunker or the bunker collapsing on you due to an earthquake or being baked like in an oven are there. Should your bunker endure the test you should have at least stored enough food for a year, proper sewage systems, other wise you stand the risk of igniting methane build-ups. Air vents are a must but a few oxygen tanks would also be useful. Water purifiers is a must as your stored water will stagnate.

Personally my theory for surviving 2012 would go something like this:
The theory is that massive Gamma rays will enter our planet.
What blocks Gamma and is the most inexpensive? Concrete!

If it was possible, the following dwelling would make your chances on surviving much better:
2ft of concrete is necessary to block Gamma rays, but to compensate for the massive rays from outer space I would say if you could construct a building with solid 25ft concrete walls with the same thickness for the roof with the whole structure being reinforced and earthquake resistant. Such a structure needs to be constructed far from the ocean or dams or any nuclear plants or from mountains to eliminate falling debris.

Inside the building there should be a top and underground floor. All doors should be of heat resisting, water tight seal doors.

Equipment should include excavating equipment, water purifiers, water, food, first aid kits, anti septic sewage tanks, full body suites and portable air-conditioners (only to be used in extreme cases).

The ventilation of the building should run for at least a mile underground to an rendezvous point being constructed of cooling material to allow air to cool the all the way before it enters the building, also being fitted with filters.

The building should have an air tight seal room where bodies (should anyone die) be kept to prevent disease.

Everything that may emit heat should be removed from the building.
Power the building with batteries or renewable power is the way to go.
